Lift up their skirties

This blog's still in nappies - doesn't even have a proper name yet - and already I feel that some Yellowman is well overdue. Here's a beauty - and pretty much the definition of slackness.

Tom

Yellowman - Shorties

I plan to split

A short, joyous and very satisfying nugget of flamenco pop. I think the title translates as "I'm Going to Divide It" - looking forward to the day when I can ask people to correct me in the comments box.

Tom

Estrella Morente, Rosario and Antonio Flores - Lo Voy a Dividir

Could this be the tune that turns you on to rai?

I don't know much about this - comes from an impulse purchase I made a couple of years ago. Think it's fucking ace though.

Tom

Cheb Brahim - Ech Hale Nabghik

Los Kraftwerkitos

Most of you probably know the story - a few years ago a German DJ called Uwe Schmidt created the Senor Coconut moniker and created an album of easy listening Latin versions of Kraftwerk classics. The result is surprisingly listenable and inventive - perhaps partly because the attention to detail in the production suggests that the guy was actually taking the project seriously. Here's one of the better ones.

Tom

Señor Coconut y Su Conjunto - Showroom Dummies

Could this be the tune that turns you on to soca?

Well, strictly speaking this is "rapso" rather than soca - but either way it's a perfectly pitched slice of reality music from Trinidad.

Tom

Brother Resistance - Cyar Take Dat

I saw Selassie I stretch forth...

Max Romeo on unstoppable form with the leftfield producer Glen Adams - I'm yet to meet the (discerning) listener who hasn't been bowled over by this tune.

Tom

Max Romeo with Glen Adams - Jordan River

For Nick II - Two slices of Detroit

As requested - two tunes from the Carl Craig Abstract Funk Theory compilation.

Tom

BFC - Galaxy
Rhythim is Rhythim - The Dance

For Nick I - Tai Chi riddim

Three versions of the Tai Chi riddim, 2003 - which to these ears is yet to be bettered. Nick wanted Tanya Stephens, but might also enjoy the Cecile side- everyone else should listen to TOK first.

Tom

TOK - Cree
Tanya Stephens - Please Me
Ce'cile - Lift Me Up (& Back Me)
